Born in the Orne, Marcel Loth joined Périgueux at the age of 27, to open an architectural practice there. Self-taught, he took up brushes in 1943, first working around portraits and caricatures. After the war, he began his long path towards non-figuration which will lead him to flamboyant pieces, thick materials and unstructured geometric figures.
During his life, Lot was the friend of Périgord Jean Boyé, discreet painter, and of the great Roger Bissière, who was of great inspiration. The painter's subjects are varied: modeled landscapes whether from Périgord or the Bassin d'Arcachon, cubic urban landscapes, portraits and characters, or even sign paintings, symbolic of his work.
Our canvas is one of those landscapes where the tendency of non-figuration is already in place. It is certainly the cliff overlooking the village of Eyzies that you must see here, with a few houses below and trees in relief. The structure of the composition is limited to working on an area delimited in its periphery by the background, here of a deep blue that one could assimilate to a night sky. The contrast produced by the vivid colors of the cubic shapes allows the subject to be extracted from the background and gives great depth.
