Genre scene
Oil on canvas, cm 73 x 47
Frame cm 91 x 55
The canvas in question is to be referred to the hand of a Flemish painter of bambocciante taste, active in Rome during the seventeenth century. The founder of this particular and fascinating pictorial taste was Peter van Laer (Haarlem, 1599 - 1642) whose presence in Rome is documented from 1625 to 1639; in the Capitoline city his painting was successful and was also a member of the Bentvueghels, association that in Rome gathered most of the Flemish artists active in the city, known in particular for its anti-academic inclinations and its particular initiation rituals. The trip to Italy had become a constant and a rite of passage for Flemish artists since the publication in 1604 of the book Schilder-Boeck by Karel van Mander , which describes the lives of over 250 painters, of the present and the past and provides the theoretical basis to start painting. It was a difficult journey, for which the artists had to provide expenses thanks to their talent and the sale of their works along the way. For many it would have been difficult to arrive and many would have chosen not to return home. The painting of the bamboccianti focuses on scenes of genre, everyday life, with representation of figures that occupy a low role in the social scale; among his works there are depictions of ports. The canvas appears to be characterized by a skillful composition, attentive to the perspective and quality of the drawing, not without a search addressed to characters of deformation. The colors are warm, characterized by brown tones that materialize with a dense and present, with a broad and lively brushwork.
