Object description :

"Writing Desk With Transformations Late XVIth Early XVIIth."
Detailed Description :
Chased bronze, gilded.
This exceptional writing desk with transformations made at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries represents a monumental garden entrance, carried by fluted columns, topped by a pediment, with fire pots and an oculus crossed by a garland of flowers.
A female bust dominates this architectural element. In front, in pairs, large covered pots are still in the register of the ornamental garden, they reproduce the large outdoor vases and are also adorned with garlands of flowers.
The whole rests on a stylized naturalistic terraced base, decorated with scrolls and flowers. Sitting under the arch, a putto is used to hold the pens during writing in his hands and a gutter on the back of the writing desk is used to store them.
On either side of the putto are therefore the two vases whose lids are in fact reversible candlesticks; they slide to reveal the ink cups.
This principle of organizing the storage of the elements of the writing desk is also a feature of travel objects, the small reversible torches can also be used for lighting independent of writing, in a hostel room for example.
Although of a certain naivety in the details, the general design and the decorative vocabulary of this writing desk are of a pretty elegance, one will think for example of the sights of landscapes or places with the silver mine or the feather of the same era.
Technically we note for example that the torches and vases are mounted in two shells, it is very visible in the photo.
This arrangement is typical of the Old Regime. Condition: Excellent original condition. Beautiful gilding.
