Old & large bronze medal. Humorous scene representing a reading monkey. Titled "Ignorabimus", abbreviation of the Latin "Ignoramus et ignorabimus" which means "We do not know and will never know", thereby expressing a form of pessimism about the possibility of knowing or explaining scientifically all aspects of the world . The German physiologist Emil du Bois-Reymond expressed this in his speech on "The limits of human knowledge" held in Leipzig on August 14, 1872 for the opening of the 45th Congress of German Naturalists and Physicians.
