"Antique “barbotine” Majolica Water Pitcher "poincaré" By Onnaing"
This antique “Barbotine” majolica water pitcher was crafted by Onnaing, in Northern France, shortly before WWI. It represents the French President Raymond Poincaré, active between 1913 and 1920. In perfect condition and very well painted, this specimen is marked with Onnaing’s factory logo as well as with mold number 816. The interior of this pitcher is painted with the typical wine lees color, often seen on Onnaing pitchers. The absence of the inscription “Made in France” is proof that this specimen was made prior to WWI. This not so frequently found barbotine representing a political celebrity is documented in Maryse Bottero’s “Pichets en barbotine” book on page 78 (Massin Editions, 2000) as well as on page 27 of Pierre Faveton’s “Les Barbotines” (Massin Editions, 1990).
