"Grisaille Signed Dominique Doncre, 1773"
Beautiful trompe l'oeil painted in oil on canvas, in grisaille, by Dominique DONCRE (Zegerscapel 1743 - Arras 1820). The work features an allegorical bas-relief, probably on the theme of geography. A female figure, on a cloud, is surrounded by scientific instruments and two putti, one of which has a laurel wreath. The stone sculpture here is rendered with great accuracy, perfectly giving the illusion of relief marked by the scars left by time. This work was certainly part of a decorative set intended to be embedded in woodwork. It is now presented in a 19th century gilt frame, in the Louis XVI style. The painting is in perfect condition. It is signed and dated 1773 in the lower left corner. Dimensions: 87.5 X 56 cm without frame, and 87 X 65 cm in total
