Moïse Kisling studied at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow, his teacher encouraged him to go to Paris. In 1910, he moved to Montmartre then to Montparnasse.
During the First World War, he enlisted in the Foreign Legion where he was seriously injured. After the war he had a house built in Sanary as well as his workshop. A friend of Modigliani, he painted many portraits before his death in 1921.
A Jew fleeing anti-Semitic persecution, he took refuge in Lisbon and then in New York.
His female nudes and portraits earned him great fame.
