Painter, draftsman and engraver, Marcel Gromaire was born in the North of France in 1892. He was educated in Douai then in Paris where his father was a high school teacher.
After a brief attempt at a career in the legal field, the young man, passionate about art, frequented the artists of Montparnasse from 1910, before being called up for his military service which lasted until 1916.
On his return to Paris, he meets Maurice Girardin, an art collector who buys most of his paintings from him. He begins to make a place for himself within the artistic world, but in parallel with other artists, not following any particular artistic trend.
Marcel Gromaire exhibits in galleries his paintings which question and sometimes disturb. In 1933, his work was consecrated during a retrospective exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel, the Swiss museum of the city of Basel. Individuals as well as the State commission many works from him. Always in search of renewal, the artist touches on all areas of art.
The artist who knew how to free himself from codes to create his own artistic reality died at the age of 78.
