Born in the heart of the Morvan in a peasant family, he began to carve pieces of wood with his knife in his youth.
On October 31, 1864, he was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon the following year busts, statues and allegorical groups.
He was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1878.
