French School. Antoine Coypel and the most famous artist of this family of painters. Son of Noël Coypel, he followed his father, who was appointed director of the Academy of Rome in 1672. There he studied the great masters of the Renaissance and ancient statuary. He is strongly influenced by the Art of Baroque and Correggio. The predispositions he developed from childhood attracted the interest of Bernini, who gave him advice. A child prodigy, he was received into the Academy on his return to Paris in 1681 at the age of 20. Filled with honor and chosen by the return to fashion the commemorative medals of the great events of his reign, became painter of the Duke of Orleans, member of the Academy of inscriptions and Belles Lettres, very richly married, Antoine Coypel possessed all the qualities and defects inherent in the official court painter. In charge of the decorations of Meudon, then of those of the Royal Palace, in 1710 he was appointed director of Drawings and Paintings of the Cabinet of the King. In 1714n Director of the Academy, in 1715 First Painter to the King and in 1717 he obtained his letters of Nobility.
His work as a painter and engraver is considerable, as an aquafortist he worked mainly from his paintings. As a decorator he was influenced more by Correggio than by Le Brun. His painting is characterized by a flexibility of attitudes, harmonious models of bodies and a fresh luminosity that envelops the volumes. He paints many mythological subjects where nymphs and satyrs rub shoulders with complacency. Influenced by Rubens, to the point that around 1690/1692, one of his Democritus portraits has long been attributed to Rubens.
