"Rare Painting Depicting 'jonah Spat Out By The Fish'"
Rare painting depicting 'Jonah spat out by the fish'. Seventeenth century.
Jonah (9th century BC – 8th century BC) was an ancient Jewish prophet, the protagonist of the Old Testament book of the same name. He is one of the twelve minor prophets and is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church: he is commemorated on September 21st. The story tells that the Lord commands Jonah to go and preach in Nineveh. Instead, he escapes with a ship that is suddenly hit by a storm . Then Jonah will find the courage to confess to his travel companions that the Lord had caused the storm because he had not obeyed him. At that point, the companions threw him into the sea and he will be swallowed by a large fish. From the belly of the fish, where remains three days and three nights, Jonah turns to God an intense prayer, which recalls one of the Psalms. Then, under divine command, the fish vomits Jonah onto the beach.
