Biography:
Giovanni Colmo after attending the Liceo Classico, enrolled in the "School of Application for Engineers," graduating in Civil Engineering in 1891.
This enabled him to be hired by the City of Turin and join the technical offices, where he then carried out his work for thirty-two years, taking leave in 1923 with the rank of Division Chief. The young Colmo, endowed with artistic talent, developed his friendships in his namesake environment from those years, and in his spare time, he joined at first timidly and then increasingly enfranchised groups headed by Delleani, Tavernier, Follini, Avondo, Cavalleri and Giani, scrutinizing and assimilating their secrets and succeeding in later years in fusing their styles and ideals. The beginning of his painting activity can be traced back to 1890, but it was in 1896 that he exhibited his first work to the public at the Società Promotrice delle Belle Arti in Turin, where he had joined that very year at the same time as the Circolo degli Artisti and where he was a regular exhibitor for thirty-five years.
In 1923 he opened a studio in Turin at 43 Via Nizza, frequented by pupils and students and distinguished clients such as H.M. Queen Elena.
At the outbreak of World War II he temporarily took refuge in Garessio in the home of his ancestors and later in Liguria in his home in Finalpia, never failing in his beloved painting practice.
Giovanni Colmo lingered on the Lombard lakes, lingered often on the Ligurian Riviera.
In 1970, the Garessio Civic Art Gallery dedicated two permanent rooms to Giovanni Colmo and his brother Eugenio.
