"Wax Sculpture. Hunting Scene Or Allegory To The Victory Of Solpherino. 19th Century."
Sculpted wax painting or perhaps molded and painted with pigments and silver metallic powder for the guns . The scene represents two armed men congratulating each other in front of a slaughtered deer under a tree. It appears that this is a hunting scene, especially since on the back an old label from an important collection bearing the No. 310 mentions the title of "Weid Mann Sheil" which means "Good hunting" in German and would therefore be a Germanic sculpture. However, the men with brown and curly hair are not at all of the Germanic type but of the Mediterranean, and their clothing seems more like uniforms with kepi and vest than hunting dress. It is for this reason that the hypothesis of a mocking and concealed allegory of the 1859 defeat of Austria-Hungary against the Franco-Sardinian coalition cannot be rejected. The Austrian stag felled under the tree of liberty. 19th century European work. Wood frame. Total dimensions: 24x19cm.
