Alongside his studies at the Beaux-arts de Montpellier, under the direction of Camille Descossy, and his work as a painter, he exercised his graphic talents as a cartoonist for the "Midi libre", "Illustration" and "Le Laugh ". It was in 1955 that Louis Mazot exhibited for the first time at the Saint-Placide gallery. Selected several times for the Critics' Prize, he also participates in the "Painters Witnesses of their Time". His work is noted for his landscapes and still lifes with dense material and a warm color palette. In the 1970s, his intimate compositions were distinguished by subjects with blurred outlines with discreet, muted tones. His landscapes and other motifs are often shrouded in a haze – a sort of sfumato – which gives them mystery and timelessness. If he likes to represent “surrealist” subjects, he rejects any belonging to the surrealist current. His still lifes with objects stacked in a precarious balance, with an enigmatic atmosphere, earned him the association, by critics, with Jean Simon Chardin, Giorgio Morandi or Balthus. Louis Mazot is considered today as one of the representatives of “poetic realism. His works are mainly found in private collections, in France, Switzerland, Great Britain, the United States and Japan.
