The beheading of John the Baptist is the death of John the Baptist by decapitation. According to the Gospels of Mark and Matthew, he was executed by order of Herod Antipas, at the request of Herodias and her daughter Salome. This episode of the New Testament is the subject of abundant Christian iconography.
