"Emmanuel Lansyer : "the Beach On The Cliffs""
Emmanuel Lansyer (1835-1893): "The beach with cliffs", oil on paper mounted on cardboard 17.5 X 27.5 cm, mounted in a large German gilding molding 28 X 38 cm. Two unpainted bands on the short sides, the artist having certainly painted on the motif several studies separated by them on the same sheet... If he had an architectural training, in particular with Viollet-le-Duc, he decided to to devote himself to painting after having taken drawing lessons at the Imperial Academy as well as the teaching of Gustave Courbet which led him to outdoorism. His art, at the crossroads of this one and that of Corot is of a great poetry which brings him closer to Eugène Boudin like our painting where tiny characters walk, perhaps fishing on foot at tide- low on a beach hemmed in pink and fringed with foam… Many museums house his works around the world, one of which is dedicated to him in his house in Loches.
