He is in permanent conflict between his impulses, his education and his morals. He is one of the creators of the "Nouvelle Revue Française", backed by the Maison Gallimard. He is one of the first to fight against colonialism and to understand the lures represented by the USSR and fascism. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1951.
