Gorjin (packing bag) open shahsavan Iran wool, cotton warp, 1950. Very good condition.

Two techniques used for this shahsavan: soumak* in the center (originally, in front of the bag) and band kilims (originally, behind the bag). Multitude of zoomorphs throughout the soumak.
The gorjins were placed on the animals (donkeys, camels) in order to transport the provisions. The smaller ones were most often used by shepherds (eg meals).

SHAHSAVAN (those who love the Shah)
Shahsavan: title granted by Shah Abbas the Great (1588-1629), Safavid ruler, in opposition to the Qizilbashs (red heads). The Qizilbashs: a confederation formed by several Turkish groups of Turkmen origin were at the origin of the Safavid dynasty founded in 1501 by Shah Ishmael (Shiite). The greedy and corrupt qizilbashs wanted to gain power. It is for this reason that Shah Abbas made an appeal to all the ethnic groups who so wished, in order to form a confederation opposing the qizilbashs. The Shahsavan confederation was born. It consisted of a significant number of qizilbashs who had remained loyal to Shah Abbas, Persian speaking tribes (Tajik: not Turkish) as well as Kurds. In exchange for their loyalty, Safavid rulers granted shahsavans privileges. Safavid: dynasty founded in 1501 by Shah Ishmael (Shiite) and which ended in 1732. *Soumak: weaving technique with wrapped weft (embroidery), called in Iran suzan, suzani meaning 'needle-embroidered'.
