He came from a Jewish family in Metz and then moved to Paris.
In 1844, he won 3rd prize in the general drawing competition of the city of Paris.
In 1852 he entered the Beaux-Arts school. He began his career as a cartonnier in the world of stained glass. He even opened his own workshop in 1868.
His pupil was Georges Rouault who was very influenced by the revival of the faith.
S his works were regularly exhibited at the Salon between 1852 and 1880.
Emile Hirsch was influenced by the Nazarene movement and the English Pre-Raphaelite movement.
