Object description :

"Georges Gobo (1876-1958) "village Du Fraisse, Auvergne" School Of Murols, Brittany, Angers,"
Very beautiful oil/panel by Georges Gobo titled on the back "village du Fraisse, Auvergne" and signed lower left. Format without frame 37.5x46cm. It is indeed a pretty post-impressionist composition by Georges Gobo who chooses here to plant his easel in Auvergne, in the village of Fraisse. As usual he uses a very powerful touch, between divided touches and larger flat areas, as for his palette here it is very rich with dominant tones of ocher, vermilion red, yellow, green and blue/grey for the mountains. Work worthy of the best painters of the Murols school such as Charretons or Zingg, because Gobo also chose to go there and he will bring back some sublime compositions. Georges Gobo or Georges Gobô, pseudonym of Georges Gobeau, born June 19, 1876 in San Francisco and died July 6, 1958 (aged 82) in Rezé, was a French painter, illustrator, lithographer and engraver, member of the Society of Painters - French engravers. Georges Gobeau was born in San Francisco where his father, of Charente origin, had come to make his fortune after taking part in the Mexican war. In 1882, his father died and his family returned to France to settle in Angoulême. Georges Gobeau becomes an apprentice with a lithographer printer in Angoulême. He is passionate about drawing, lithography, watercolor, and painting. In 1900, he moved to Angers and became a member of the Society of Friends of the Arts, which invited him to exhibit his first works at its Salon of 1900. Georges Gobeau took the pseudonym "Georges Gobo" (or "Gobô") . In 1907, he produced his first etching on zinc plates. In 1908, he exhibited for the first time in Paris, at the Salon of the National Society of Fine Arts. Since then, Georges Gobo has participated in regional and national fairs. He moved to Paris in 1911. He exhibited his etchings and lithographs at the Galerie Georges Petit in 1916 and 1926, and his drawings and paintings at Bernheim Jeune in 1919 then at Durand-Ruel in 1925. Subsequently, Gobo travels abroad to Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Spain and Morocco. There he painted canvases or sketches of everyday life (Venice Market) and landscapes which he then reproduced on copper. However, it is in France between his residences of Douarnenez in Brittany and that of Angers in Anjou that he finds his artistic inspiration. He produced numerous lithographs, etchings (including six etchings of the city of Parthenay), wash drawings, drawings and paintings. He also travels to Saint-Jean de Luz and Auvergne, where he regularly works at the famous Ecole de Murol. He meets the Angevin poet Auguste Pinguet with whom he shares the same sensitivity and a common passion for old books. They criss-cross the Angevin or Breton countryside in search of pictorial motifs and poetic themes. Georges Gobeau died on July 6, 1958 in Rezé, near Nantes. The works of his studio were dispersed at auction on July 1, 1991 at Drouot. A retrospective was devoted to him in February-April 2009 at the Grand-Théâtre in Angers.
