Originally from Moravia - present-day Czech Republic - Kurt Groger studied at the Dresden Academy from 1923 to 1929. Exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants from 1935, the artist forged friendships with André Vuillard, Albert Marquet and Jean Puy. Settling permanently in Paris in 1938 to flee Nazism, the artist was forced to enlist in the Czechoslovak army, upon demobilization, he joined the Resistance in France in 1942. Marked by the war, the artist kills himself in 1952.
Close to Fauve sensibilities, Kurt Groger makes color the catalyst for lively painting. Observing modern life, the artist places himself as the spectator of a dynamic world, where the cafes are bubbling and the streets are teeming. Time seems suspended on the vibration of a shimmering palette, celebrating the vitality of an effervescent world.
