Otis Oldfield, painter, lithographer and teacher, was born in Sacramento, California, on July 3, 1890. Established in San Francisco from 1909, he studied at the Best's Art School, before returning to Paris, and perfecting his teaching at the Académie Julian in Paris. Exhibiting regularly at the Salon d'Automne and the Independents, he quickly received French and American recognition.

He returned to the United States in 1924, and became a professor at the California School of Fine Arts. Rich in artistic experience and a particularly appreciated modern vision, he participated in the making of the frescoes of the Coit Tower in San Francisco around 1934.

During the Second World War, Otis worked as a draftsman at Fort Mason Marine Repair, then taught at the California College of Arts and Crafts. His students included Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliveira.

His work is held in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Crocker Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Oakland Museum of California, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Otis Oldfield died in San Francisco on May 18, 1969.
