According to Genesis, having arrived at the place God had named, Abraham builds the altar, lays down the wood, binds Isaac, stretches him on the altar and raises his hand to strike down his son. An angel of God stops him, telling him not to raise his hand against his son ("Lay no hands on this young man, do him no harm!...your son, your only son!"). Now God knows that Abraham fears him, because he did not steal his son from him. A ram that had its horns caught in a bush is sacrificed on the altar.
