"Silk Tabriz Rug, Haji Jalili, Iran, Circa 1870"
This is an exceptionally rare rug in Tabriz - Haji Jalili silk, on a natural silk foundation: warps, wefts and fringes. circa 1870. A rare museum quality rug, made in the workshops of the Shah's famous master weaver, Haji Jalili, in the late 19th century. The carpet is prayer-shaped with an ocher background and an ivory field adorned with a Mirhab and a stylized suspended oil lamp, as well as double columns in the shape of thin rolls of paper. The parterre is decorated with seedlings of finely drawn ruby flowers. It also has double spandrels and a headband inlaid with fine branches and tree roots crenellated in the shape of diamonds. Finally, it includes five borders, the main one being in old gold and ruby, with motifs of stylized turtle shells geometrically surrounded by palmettes of multicolored flowers.
