"Important Ghoum Carpet In Silk Signed Atelier Imperial, Iran Circa 1970"
This silk carpet signed by the imperial workshop of the time of the Shah. It is of exceptional rarity due to its size and superior quality. Unfortunately, photos cannot do its unique beauty justice due to the high quality of silk used, so viewing it in person is recommended. This rug features a medallion on a beige background. It was made in the city of Ghom, located about 150 kilometers south of Tehran, known to be the second holiest city in Iran and an important theological center with many religious seminaries. Carpet production began in Ghom at the beginning of the 20th century and is renowned for its fine workmanship and woolen or silk pile, with varied patterns borrowed from various Iranian provenances. Ghom rugs are often tied tightly with the Persian knot, with pattern details sometimes made in silk. Garden decorations, medallions and figurative motifs with drawings of animals and plants are common. Today, other localities also manufacture carpets sold under the Ghom name.
