"Japanese Lacquered Cabinet, Japan Edo Period"
Precious lacquer cabinet with two leaves and a drawer decorated with cranes flying over the waves, revealing six small drawers decorated with seafood. It surprises with the variety of techniques used: e nashiji for seafood, heidatsu or hyômon (cut-out gold leaf) on part of the crane wings, kanagai (cut-out silver or pewter) for the foam of the waves, hira and taka maki-e for the rest of the decorations. Incredible finesse, note the depth that the artist was able to render at the eyes of the cranes ! Finely chiselled copper fittings, key missing. Japan, early 19th century.
