Oil on canvas representing an equestrian scene by Istvan Benyovszky, Hungarian painter born in 1898 and died in 1969.
Signed lower right.
Good condition, the canvas has two small old restorations visible in the photos.
Original frame in blackened wood, with various lacks of veneer.
Dimensions : 79 X 59.5 cm.
Already as a child, István Benyovszky loved to draw, especially equestrian scenes. His art teacher quickly recognized his talent and he was the winner of several national-level drawing competitions. His drawings were published at that time in the magazine Our Flag. After graduating from high school in 1916, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest; at that time his name was already known. He graduated in 1922.
His main themes are not only horses, moments of peasant life, but also historical subjects. He also painted cavalry battles from the Medieval Conquest and World War period. Ferenc Erdei awarded the artist a special award during his tenure as minister.
Sándor Solymossy's book Hungarian legends and tales and István Györffy's book The Silai Shepherds are decorated with his illustrations.
