Work of the famous Ambroise Louis Garneray, born February 19, 1783 in Paris, where he died on September 11, 1857.
Corsair, marine painter, draftsman, engraver and French writer, precursor of the maritime adventure novel. He knew an adventurous life with Surcouf and Dutertre, he was eight years prisoner of the British. (You can consult a "rich" biography of the character on the internet).
In the foreground the start of the stone bridge on the Bastide quarter side, the first bridge built in Bordeaux, at the instigation of Napoleon 1st, the stone bridge unified the two banks of the Garonne in the same city.
Inaugurated in 1822. Built by order of Napoleon 1st, it has seventeen arches, in a nod to the number of letters appearing in the name of Napoleon Bonaparte. It will be for nearly 150 years the only bridge to unite the left bank, historic city, and the right bank, and its Bastide district. (Source: Bordeaux Tourism and Congress).
The artist offers us here by this colorized lithograph a very beautiful view of Bordeaux, the stone bridge and the quay very animated by many characters who go about their business; on the river Garonne a charming flotilla of colorful sailboats navigates in all directions and from all sides. On the other bank, the left bank, you can see the superb architectural works that characterize the city of Bordeaux, including the Porte de Bourgogne, at the end of the stone bridge.
So here is to conclude a very beautiful and interesting historical lithograph which plunges us into the atmosphere of Bordeaux at the beginning of the 19th century.
