This is a high quality wool rug decorated with floral scrollwork, foliage, birds and quadrupeds on a midnight blue background. The border is also decorated with flowers with bird motifs on an ivory background. The velvet is silky lambswool with flowers surrounded by silk on a cotton foundation. The city of Nain, located 200 kilometers east of Isfahan and at the western tip of the Dasht-e-Kavir desert, is famous for the quality of its carpets. The town's clay dwellings and its mosque, which houses relics from the 10th century, are also among its attractions. Naïn carpets are recognized for their superior quality material, their meticulous execution and their high knotting density, which often exceeds one million knots per square meter.
