"Chardonnay, Cabinetmaker- Regency Style Commode Inlaid With Flower Sheaves.circa 1890."
Inspired by models created during the years 1750-1755 by Pierre Roussel (1723-1782), this very beautiful chest of drawers in the Louis XV-Regence style stamped by the Parisian cabinetmaker Chardonnay features a delicate inlaid decoration of branches on the front and on its sides. flowered and foliated with kingwood on the end against a satin background set with a crimped listel. Enriched with a latticework inlaid with cubes, this unfolds within fretted gilt bronze frames chiseled in a set of curves and counter-curves perfectly mastered with Rocaille motifs (volutes and leafy acanthus florets, shells with wavy edges and florets). Opening with two drawers without crosspiece, it has an elegant crossbow profile punctuated with openwork shells. Topped with a Brocatelle marble top, it rests on four arched legs with curves underlined by ample drops and ribboned rush. High quality cabinet work from the last third of the 19th century. Circa 1890. Endowed with a beautiful formal amplitude as well as a high quality of execution, this generous Louis XV Style Chest of Drawers with perfectly balanced curves surrounded by curly listels of kingwood displays on the front and on its sides a delicate inlaid decoration with a radiating or slender pattern on a backdrop of satin wood ribboned with sheaves and flowering foliage stems. Axially, an astonishing marquetry with geometric patterns of cubes evoking a rustic basket of woven wicker punctuates the floral compositions in which carnations - a symbol of conjugal tenderness - in buds or with open petals pour out their slender bloom. These are set with sinuous frames, multi-lobed cartridges in gilded bronze with fretted shapes covered with foliage, scrolls, acanthus windings, half-shells with wavy edges and voluptuously chiseled flowers. A rich adornment of chiseled gilded bronze with Rocaille finery embellishes the structure of the piece of furniture, lavishes it with luster and brilliance: finial, scrolls with acanthus foliage centered with a beautiful mirrored shell motif punctuate its uprights; ribboned, an undulating rush sheaths its front base set in scrolled hooves; opulent asymmetrical openwork shells, palmettes-fleurons stamp, encircle the keyhole, cul-de-lamp and fixed pull handles of this piece of furniture of great aesthetic elegance. Resting on arched legs weighted in front of a supplely profiled crossbow apron, this chest of drawers opens with two ample drawers with concealed crossbars. Embracing its curved forms, a thick molded Brocatelle marble top with corbin's beak caps it: its veining nuanced with diaper luminosity - like the trim of chiseled gilded bronzes - the marquetry skillfully modulating warm tones. Inspired by pieces of furniture from the Louis XV period and, more precisely, works designed around 1750-1755 by the Master Cabinetmakers Pierre Roussel (1723-1782) or Jean-Pierre Latz (1691-1754) from which it ingeniously declines ample forms, skilful inlaid floral compositions, bronze adornment with a masterful interplay of curves and counter-curves, our chest of drawers proves to be highly representative of the creations of luxury Parisian cabinetmaking from the second half of the 19th century. It is in this case stamped on its frame by the Parisian cabinetmaker Chardonnay, - recently rehabilitated in the reference work of Christopher Payne Paris, The Quintessence of furniture in the 19th century, Paris: Ed. Monelle-Hayot, 2018,p .281-. Within the thin corpus of his works by predilection of Regency Style listed to date, our chest of drawers constitutes a rare example of a quality production imprinted on an equal footing with some of his better-known contemporaries with individuality and cachet. It will thus be noted that this chest of drawers of undeniable formal sophistication is similar in its remarkable marquetry work to certain Louis XV Style creations executed in the years 1880-1890 by the Maison Paul Sormani (1841-1937) or Millet (1853- 1918).
