His childhood was totally impregnated by Orthodox Jewish culture. His father wanted him to be a rabbi.
The young Emmanuel learned to draw in hiding place. He left his native shtetl to arrive at Paris in 1913 at the age of 19. Curious, he travels through Europe and discovers the painting of his contemporaries.
He had his first exhibition in 1922 and gradually asserted himself as one of the painters of the Jewish soul alongside his elders, Modigliani, Soutine and Chagall. Mané-Katz's art seeks to keep the Torah culture alive, painter of rabbis and ghettos.
The city of Haifa in Israel has dedicated a museum to
him.
