Léon Haffner was born on 4 December 1881 in Paris in a bourgeois environment. After high school science, his choices turned to drawing.
A rich and varied career followed. It illustrates a large number of magazines, Le Bulletin, Le journal de la marine, Le Yacht Club de France, Le Grand Larousse ... His illustrations will also delight the passionate readers of the sea novelist Paul Chack. All his life Haffner will multiply his collaborations to many magazines, to the French Maritime League, to many associations. This efficiency and hard work earned him many awards, including his appointment as official painter of the navy in 1918.
He was a member of the painters of the French Navy from 1918, when he was posted to the French Maritime League .
He was the friend of many personalities of the sea: Marin Marie, Jean Charcot, Virginie Hériot .
His works have been exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris and in 1991 and 1993 at the Katia Granoff Gallery in Honfleur.
The practice of sailing, at the beginning of the 20th century, is a hobby reserved for a limited clientele. Léon Haffner is a pioneer and he highlights all the poetry of the yachting competitions.
His work is a source of documentation of unique quality and precision. This knowledge he acquired through contact with these racing yachts, and of course by sailing.
Thus Léon Haffner crossed the twentieth century by marking with his art and his talents the national navy, merchant, fishing and pleasure.
