Object description :

"Amida Buddha, Japan, Edo Period (1603-1868), Lacquered And Gilded Wood."
Sculpture representing the Amida Buddha (Japanese: Amida Nyorai). The Buddha arranges his hands in the Jōshō gesture, one of the nine gestures of Amida Kubon-in. The sculpture of the Buddha is made with great care and finesse, which can be seen in the face or the points of the figure. The Buddha is seated on a tiered base decorated with a frieze of lotus flowers.

Amitabha (Amida) Buddha has been revered in Japan since the 7th century. The Future Buddha, also called "Immeasurable Light" (which may be the origin of the custom of gilding statues), is associated with Mahayana Buddhism and the Pure Land of Supreme Wisdom. His attribute is the lotus, and he was sometimes depicted as a trinity - with his bodhisattva appendages - Kannon (sc. Avalotiteśvara) and Seishi (sc. Mahasthamaprata).

Carved, lacquered and gilded wood.

Japan, Edo era (1603-1868). Height 63 cm (height of the Buddha himself 38 cm).

State of conservation as it appears in the photographs, there are visible losses and repairs.
