"Chinese Sage - Immortal, Root Wood, China, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century."
This monumental rootwood sculpture depicts a Chinese sage, possibly one of the Eight Taoist Immortals. The man with the long mustache and beard is dressed in a characteristic cap and robe. The Chinese artist has skilfully exploited the nature of the root wood by sculpting the sage's expressive base or garments, which contrast interestingly with the naturalistically depicted face or hands.
China, Qing dynasty, 19th century. Height 85 cm (height of the figure itself 79 cm).
Preserved condition as seen in photographs, relatively good, minor losses, the sage was probably holding something in his hands originally. A fragment of the base is detached.
