Object description :

"Portrait Of Philip III (felipe III) King Of Spain Juan Pantoja De La Cruz (cercle Of) XVIIe"
Beautiful portrait of the King of Spain Philip III.

This 17th century portrait is probably from a Spanish school close to the famous course painter Pantoja de Cruz.
The King is represented here as a teenager with a posture of three quarters, he wears the large strawberry typical of the late sixteenth century.

The King is named at the top: “PHILIPPVS III HIS REX”

The portrait is in very good condition, it was previously returned.
A scratch in the strawberry should be reported.

Dimensions: 60 x 47 cm

Juan Pantoja de La Cruz (1553 - 1608)

He is a pupil of court painter Alonso Sánchez Coello in Madrid and must have helped his master to conform to his duties as painter of the Spanish king Philip II. Pantoja probably continues to work in his master’s studio after completing his training. Married in 1585, he began painting for the court at that time. After the death of Sánchez Coello in 1588, Pantoja took over the workshop of his master and became a painter of the court of Philip II of Spain.
He continued to work for the court and the nobility and painted portraits of Prince Philip, the future Philip III, in 1592 and 1594.
Juan Pantoja de la Cruz painted a large number of state portraits with the combined forces of his workshop, his servants, his apprentices and his collaborators. He is above all a portrait painter attached to the royal family (whom he accompanies during trips to Valladolid, Burgos, Lerma and Escurial) and to the high aristocracy.

Philip III (1578-1621) King of Spain

Spanish king of the house of Habsburg born on April 14, 1578 in Madrid and died on March 31, 1621 in the same city. Son of Philip II and his niece Anne of Austria, he was king of Spain, Naples, Sicily and Portugal from 1598 until his death.
Poor in health, he left the Duke of Lerme, his minister, to govern under his name.
It was during the reign of Philip III that the practice of the favourite ruler in the sovereign’s place was inaugurated.
Spain is therefore governed by favourites who are not quite prime ministers. The king delegates to them his authority and the exercise of power. A peace treaty was concluded with England in 1604; a 12-year truce was signed with the Netherlands in 1609; finally, an alliance with France gave to Louis XIII the daughter of Philip III, the infante Anne of Austria. It was also under Philip III that the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) broke out, in which he took sides for his house, the house of Austria, and that the conspiracy of Venice (1618) took place, as well as the occupation by the Spanish troops of the Valteline.
