Henry D 'estienne "young Girl From Chateaulin" Brittany

Henry d'Estienne was born on August 1, 1872 in Conques-sur-Orbiel, capital of Aude, a village two hours' walk north of Carcassonne. He is the son of François d'Estienne (1834-1905), cabinetmaker sculptor and director of a sculpture school, aged 37, and Marie Julie Joséphine Guyot (1836-1878), his 34-year-old wife. In the civil status, he is named Henri Claude and will only use the spelling "Henry" from 1893 for his first participation in the Salon des artistes français, spelling of his signature as an artist. Henry d'Estienne studied at the high school of Carcassonne, then at that of Montpellier. Pushed by his father, himself an artist, he moved to Paris4 and in 1887 took courses at the School of Decorative Arts and studied at the Gobelins School before entering the School of Fine Arts as a student of Jean-Léon Gérôme. He graduated from the Beaux-Arts in 1898. In 1898, he had his first success with the purchase by the French State of his Portrait of Grand'Mother at the Salon des artistes français of 1899.
