Gouache on paper representing "Jacob arriving at Laban's to ask for his daughter's hand" signed lower left M. Turpin and dated 1794 in a period gilt wood and stucco frame. This gouache represents the arrival of Jacob at Laban's, it is the daughters of the latter, Rachel and Léa who welcome him as they make their flock drink at a fountain. In the background on the right the house of Laban and on the right a clear view on a valley animated by a village. This miniature gouache teeming with fine and delicate details is the work of Emilie Sophie de Montullé Marquise de Turpin (1756-1816) from a family of artists and collectors, it was during the revolutionary period that Emilie de Montullé began to paint miniatures with talent to feed his family, in particular his son Lancelot Théodore Turpin de Crissé, artist and collector who had a brilliant career as a painter during the first half of the 19th century, particularly under the first Empire...The works of Emilie sophie de Montullé are of a rare quality like their number, one of them is preserved in the museum of fine arts of Lille.
