Superb and large oil painting on canvas from the end of the 19th century representing boats in a rough sea by Gustave-Henri COLIN (1828-1910) Gustave COLIN was born in Arras on July 11, 1828 and died in Paris in 1910. Based in Ciboure, he then produced a large number of landscapes. In 1862, he moved to Saint-Jean-de-Luz where he painted many scenes of the Basque Country. Professor of painting at the Academie Julian in Paris, he participated in the Salon des Refusés in 1863 and, in 1874, was part of the first exhibition of impressionist painters where he presented five paintings. He obtained a medal of honor at the 1880 salon, a silver medal in 1889, and the gold medal in 1900. Émile Zola was a great admirer of the painter, and a large number of his works are kept in museums nationals.
