Object description :

"Carafe"
Pitcher in silver metal and hard stones from Los Castillo circa 1960 Antonio Castillo and his three brothers, Jorge, Miguel and Justo, were all trained in the Spratling workshop before setting up on their own and opening Los Castillo in 1939, one of the most important producers of Mexican jewelry, now in its second generation. The Castillos were responsible for the introduction of work combining two or more metals. They also made Aztec enamels, feathers and mosaics. Their practice combined complex and simple selections in solid silver, sometimes with semi-precious stones or glass. In 1929, at the age of 16, Antonio was the first of the Castillo brothers to join Spratling as an apprentice. The success of their business is based on their individual skills, both as goldsmiths and as designers. Their work is inspired by ancient Aztec figures and decorations, which over the years have become increasingly varied and popular. Los Castillo's work is an important representation of the Mexican modernist movement of the mid-20th century and is highly sought after today.
