Ancient thaumatrope jewel with Masonic decoration. Optical illusion using the phenomenon of retinal persistence. The metal disc is held by a beliere, on which one can observe a square part, a compass and the letter G, on the other side the missing parts. When you spin the disc fast enough, you have the illusion that the compass and the square encircle the letter G. (see photo montage reconstituting the drawing) Object dating from the 19th century. 1.5cm in length. In very good condition.
