Trained at the Académie Julian in the studio of Jules Lefebvre, Elisabeth Sonrel was an admirer of Botticelli and the Pre-Raphaelites. Although her work borrows from the symbolist language, she does not seem to be linked to the movement as such. She was awarded a Bronze Medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle for Le Sommeil de la Vierge which was acquired by President Felix Faure on a personal basis. The artist also reveals himself in a more Art Nouveau taste, with elements of style comparable to Mucha.
His work contains diaphanous and angelic figures, where references to the Italian Renaissance meet Arthurian myths. The work we present is completely in the vein of the artist, where the dream seems to cross the meditation.
