"Pierre Letuaire (1798-1884) Landscape At The Foot Of The Sainte-victoire Mountain"
LANDSCAPE AT THE FOOT OF THE SAINTE VICTOIRE MOUNTAIN Original pencil drawing by Pierre LETUAIRE (1798-1884) Pierre Letuaire was born on August 6, 1798 in Toulon. He became the friend of a pupil of Anne-Louis Girodet, the Marquis de Clinchamp, who had just opened the first painting studio in Toulon. In 1823, he succeeded Laurent Julien as professor of drawing at the college of Toulon, a position he held until 1867. He was received as a member of the Académie du Var in 1835. The same year, he innovated by creating courses free of charge drawings with, in particular, industrial drawing courses open to masons, carpenters and other professionals. It was for this voluntary activity that he was decorated in 1860 with the Legion of Honor by Napoleon III during his second visit to Toulon. In 1837, he followed the Constantine expedition, of which he brought back views and portraits. In 1840, he exhibited in Toulon his large composition An episode of the army of Algeria; an attack by Bedouins in a defile. Pierre Letuaire became a press correspondent for the magazine L'Illustration in 1844 and remained so for a quarter of a century. He participated in the illustrations of several newspapers and magazines Le Mistral, La Provence Artistique et Picturesque and Le Monde illustré. In 1867, he obtained the academic palms on the occasion of the cessation of his functions at the high school of Toulon and, the following year, he was appointed municipal councillor. *** Signed lower left Dimensions 12 x 18 cm Good condition – See photo
