Seamstresses surprised at work
Oil on canvas
H. 35 cm; L. 23 cm
This charming little painting of very good quality is representative of Italian genre painting at the beginning of the 18th century. If the author could not be identified to date, he is probably in the entourage of Crespi, who, on many occasions, represented scenes from the life of humble people (housewives, cooks, washerwomen, etc.) , in dark atmospheres where the figures are highlighted by accented lighting. Our artist manages to restore the dignity, the eagerness to work and the correctness of the attitudes of these seamstresses, barely interrupted in their work by entering the room. The rendering of fabrics and materials is remarkable, thanks to the very fluid brushwork.
