Pupil of Jozef Geefs and Jacob de Braeckeleer in Antwerp, Josuë Dupon distinguished himself in 1891 with the Gold Medal of the Salon d' Antwerp. Accustomed to the Antwerp Zoo, he draws his inspiration there and his precise look at animal anatomy. The sculptor had a brilliant career, receiving many orders for busts, monuments and medals. At the start of his career, his conception of art was strongly influenced by the traditional artistic ideals of the 19th century. After the turn of the century, its compositions and surface treatment changed and became more modern. He met Rembrandt Bugatti around 1905 or 1906 at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and invited him to Antwerp. Dupon thus becomes a friend and a kind of father figure for Rembrandt Bugatti. Working in all genres and mastering all techniques and materials, Josuë Dupon was equally capable of faithfully expressing detail.Josuë Dupon was a technically flawless realist, with a sense of the dramatic, a sense of decorative complexity and a tendency to idealization. Dupon remains an important sculptor not only through his work but also through the influence he exerted through his interactions and his collaboration with other sculptors such as Lagae, Bugatti and Bourdelle, but also because he trained sculptors in prominent as Albéric Collin (1886-1962), Willy Kreitz (1903-1982) and Albert Poels (1903-1984).
