Eugène Chigot ( November 22, 1860 Valenciennes / July 14, 1923 Paris ).
French painter 19/20th century.
Pupil of his father, the military painter Alphonse Chigot, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1880, where he worked mainly in the studio of Cabanel.
He received a mention at the Paris Salon in 1886, a third medal in 1887, thanks to which he was awarded a travel grant that allowed him to travel to Holland, Italy and Spain, and a second medal in 1890.
He settled in Etaples, near Le Touquet, where he stayed from 1887 to 1893, during which time he became, with his childhood friend Henri Le Sidaner, the leader of the Etaples School, which included more than two hundred artists influenced by Impressionism, both French and foreign, united in their desire to break away from official academicism.
He became an official Painter of the Navy from 1891, Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1896.
In 1893, he stayed for a while in Berck and married Marthe Colle on April 8, 1893. He came back to live in Etaples from 1893 to 1895, then in Le Touquet Paris-Plage from 1895 to 1898, in Dunkerque from 1898 to 1902, then in Petit-Fort-Philippe, near Dunkerque, from 1902 to 1908. He then settled in Paris. He is a sensitive and generous artist, joyful, a happy man.
He was appointed Inspector of the Teaching of Drawing and Museums in November 1906.
It was in Etaples that he painted his seascapes, working on the theme of fishermen and sailboats.
From 1903, his work turned to landscapes, castles and gardens.
He was sent on a mission for the army in 1917 and 1918, from which he returned upset by the ravages of war on men and places. Marked and prematurely aged, he tirelessly painted the garden of his studio until his death.
He regularly participated in the Salon des Artistes Français from 1883 to 1923, the year of his death. He also exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1903.
