First holder of the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1837, he traveled at his own expense to Italy where he shared a studio in Rome with Corot, before winning the First Prize in 1845 which earned him a three-year stay at the Villa Medici. , which pleased him so much that he decided to settle there, sending Italian landscapes to the Salon every year.
