"Achille Benouville : "the Beautiful Italian""
Jean Achille Benouville (1815-1891 ): "The Italian beauty", watercolor on paper 20.5 X 12 cm, mounted by a neutral pH marie-louise in a gilded louis-philippe frame with rounded corners (wear), stamp of the 1901 sale of workshop (Lugt 228a) bearing the lot number "133" on the back. First holder of the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1837, he traveled at his own expense to Italy where he shared a studio in Rome with Corot, before winning the First Prize in 1845 which earned him a three-year stay at the Villa Medici. , which pleased him so much that he decided to settle there, sending Italian landscapes to the Salon every year. Our watercolor, of great subtlety in the passages of hues, thanks to the naturalness of the pose, is one of his best works outside the landscape.
