Rare painting from the German period by the artist. Pierre Ernest Kohl was a painter and draftsman born in Monaco on February 3, 1897 and died on June 6, 1985 in Les Brenets in Switzerland. He was known for his expressionist style in his works which mainly included portraits and nudes. Kohl began his artistic career as an industrial designer for the shipyards of Monaco. He then moved to Paris to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he was influenced by German expressionist artists such as Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. During the 1920s Kohl moved to Berlin and worked as an illustrator for German magazines. He also produced many paintings during this period, some of which were exhibited in Berlin galleries. After leaving Berlin in 1933 due to the rise of the Nazi Party, Kohl returned to Monaco and began to concentrate on his paintings, creating portraits and nudes in his characteristic style. Kohl's works have been exhibited in numerous galleries in France, Germany and Switzerland. He also participated in group exhibitions with other expressionist artists. One of his best-known works is titled "La Danse" and sold at auction in 2013 for over 10,000 euros. He also painted many portraits of personalities from Monegasque and French society. Critical recognition Kohl was considered one of the most important artists of the expressionist scene in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. His break with the Nazi movement in Germany was also widely praised. Today, Kohl is considered an important artist of his generation and his works are represented in collections around the world.
