Since childhood Kastner showed a talent for portrait painting and in 1800 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He was adored for his portraits of Viennese high society and his works can be found in Vienna's museums. According to the ancient memory inscription on the back of the canvas with the age of the depicted Karl Ritter von Bohr (b. 1772) and his daughter (b. 1803), we assume that the painting was executed approx. 1810.
Inscription: Inscribed in German on the reverse on the old original label: "Portrait of Karl Ritter von Bohr with his daughter Josefine, upper left corner and coat of arms of the Geraldic Society. KV von Bohr, born in 1772, sa daughter was born in 1803. The painting executed by Johann Evangelist Kastner (b. 1776)..." On the back on the stretcher an old exhibition label from the end of the 19th century from the famous Viennese gallery Miethke, an old label with the catalog number of the F.Koehler gallery, in the upper right corner a label of Vienna Artists Unit.
