"Precious Metal Encrusted Shakudo Tsuba By Yoshiaki. Japan Edo Period Late 18th Century."
Tsuba shakudo inlaid with solid gold, silver, shibuichi and sentoku. The setting presents us with a Japanese warrior slaying an enemy wearing foreign armor that appears to be Chinese or even Mongol. This could be a reference to the attempted invasion of Japan by the Mongols from China in the 13th century. The tsuba bears the signature of Yoshiaki who was one of the greatest artists of his time. He was copied throughout the 19th century, tsubas bearing his signature are countless, and genuine works by Yoshiaki are very rare. The copies always present weaknesses, either in the drawing, or in the technique, or in the patinas, or in the choice of materials. The tsuba presented here is unquestionably by the artist, so perfect is its execution. Japan late 18° around 1800. Excellent condition. Length 64mm Thickness; 3.8mm Tsuba Tsuba and 7.6mm Inlay
