"Bronze "the Childhood Of Silenus", After Clodion - 2nd Part Of The Nineteenth"
Bronze group with brown patina, entitled "The Childhood of Silene", signed Clodion and annotated Cresson Éditeur on the terrace. Claude Michel (1738-1814) said Clodion, is a Lorraine sculptor, pupil of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, known to have been rewarded many times for his mythological and allegorical work. "The Childhood of Silenus" represents a young satyr in human form, his panpipes slung over his shoulder, accompanied by a bacchante and two children, all dressed in drapes and animal skins. They dance, play the tambourine and wander around in a joyful atmosphere. This group is fixed on a base in Morello cherry marble from Italy with a molded and beaded edge. The whole rests on an oval base with a mahogany groove. We will appreciate this work for its realism, its jovial spirit and its dimension. ******** Period: 2nd part of the 19th century.
